What is Mehndi? Mehndi is the traditional art of adorning the body with henna by drawing intricate patterns on the skin with henna paste. Henna (lawsonia inermis) comes from the plant of the same name which usually grows in very dry and arid regions around the globe. The leaves of the henna plant are picked, dried and ground into a fine powder which is then used to make the henna paste.

Mehndi has been used in beauty rituals and customs from time immemorial. It is the oldest documented cosmetic and widely used through the Middle and Far East. It is used for its moisturizing and sun protecting properties as well as a hair dye, and its ability to transform the skin with red patterns. It is rumored that Cleopatra and Nefertiti used henna as well as Fatima, the Prophet Muhammed's daughter, and Mumtaz Mahal, to which the Taj Mahal was built.

Mehndi produces a red/brown stain on the top layers of skin. Depending on the skin type of the individual, location on the body and amount of time that the henna paste is left in place, designs may last anywhere from a few days to two weeks! Henna paste is perfectly safe and contains no harsh chemicals. The henna paste used contains only henna powder, dextrose, lemon juice and lavender essential oil. Reactions are rare, and it is considered safe for pregnant women and children too. If you are at all concerned about the safety of henna, please contact Samantha for more information.

Samantha (your coordinator) has been practicing the art of mehndi for several years. She was introduced to it in her university days, and immediately took a shine to adorning the bodies of her friends. She regularly decorates herself with this wonderful temporary body art, and anyone else who will sit still long enough! Each participant in this event will receive at least one mehndi design of their choice - additional designs depend on both time and the amount of henna paste left. Samantha will provide her sketchbook and other images to choose from. Custom designs may be discussed. As her work is done freehand, results may vary.
