General Info Zona Arqueológica Tancama $0.00 13 kilometers from the Magical Town of Jalpan de Serra you will find the Ruins of Tancama, an archaeological zone that will welcome you with the silence of the long centuries that has remained there, waiting for you to discover and tour.

Tancama which in Huasteca language means Cerro de Fuego is a pre-Hispanic settlement that has been transformed into a place full of peace and tranquility. When you visit it you will discover that it keeps among its stones whispers of other lives, of other times, of other cultures.

This archaeological zone is located on the banks of the Cerro de Fuego and has the construction of three uneven squares that try to simulate the mountain that gives it its name. In addition, the tour will give you the possibility to imagine the Huastec civilization that inhabited it more than a thousand years ago and you will find one of the smallest ball courts that has been found in Mesoamerica.

This site is also an ideal opportunity to marvel at the landscapes of the Sierra Gorda and the communion that ancient civilizations had with nature. The murmur of the birds will accompany you on your walk. It's a great place to explore, take pictures, and take a moment of pause and reflection during your visit to Jalpan de Serra.

We recommend you go with sunscreen, insect repellent, hat and long sleeves. Don't forget to bring your water bottle so you stay hydrated at all times. If you decide to go in the rainy season and you do not have a pick-up vehicle, it is preferable that you hire the services of a certified tourism promotion agency to support you with the guided tour and transportation.

Tancama has free access and is open to the public from Thursday to Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
The site is about 15 minutes by taxi from the center of Jalpan.

Zona Arqueológica Tancama is just a few kilometers outside of Jalpan. It had a long period of occupation (200 BC-900). It has three large squares and 56 buildings. We took a taxi out this morning and had a look around, then our taxi driver, Carlos, came back to fetch us. It was a really beautiful site.
We noticed this morning that the scaffolding was off of the front of the Misión Santiago Apóstol de Jalpan. I got my hopes up that maybe we’d be able to go in and have a look but we went past this evening and it looks like we’re out of luck. The construction crew says it’ll be at least a week before folks can go back in. At least we got to see the facade without the scaffolding, and we got a pic of the crew. They seemed disproportionately pleased to pose for us.
I am finally getting good nights’ sleep. Interestingly, Jalpan is almost the exact same we Arrion as Edmonton. That might have something to do with it?
