General Info Yelapa As a comunidad indigena, Yelapa is a land grant or reservation legally set aside and protected for its indigenous people. The land is held collectively by the community. $0.00 Yelapa managed to keep government greed from taking away their land and constructing hideous hotels, which is why Yelapa is left largely "unspoiled".

The name “Yelapa” is believed to derive from an old Native American word meaning “where two rivers meet the sea.”

Cell service is spotty at best. Wifi is relatively fast, and most places have it but don't have the password readily accessible so you need to ask for it.

    • There is a decent place by Angelina’s for shopping and two in town
    • Leticias: Located on the road to the liquor store. It sells most of its grocery needs. It also sells, beer and ice cream.
    • Tencha’s: This is the largest of all of the grocery stores, and offers the widest selection of goods. They even sell liquor, beer, and ice.They also sell telephone cards for the local pay phones.

      • Cafe Bahia: Located right on the shore and featuring ample outdoor seating, Cafe Bahia is popular for its all-day breakfast entrees. They’re famous for their fresh fruit platters, omelets, quesadillas, and seafood salads (pictured above). They even offer a Sunday brunch that includes eggs Florentine and eggs Benedict.
      • Cafe Eclipse: Open for breakfast and lunch, Cafe Eclipse is a cozy beachside eatery whose menu options include seafood, sandwiches, chilaquiles, omelets, and hotcakes. They’re also well-known for their tortilla soup, which is among the best in the region. Closed on Sundays.

      • Chico's: Chico’s is one of the newer eating establishments in Yelapa. Fresh seafood offerings include fish, octopus, and shrimp, but the restaurant is better known for its extensive cocktail menu and live music. Yelapa isn't just any coastal town. It was settled by four main families who came down the mountain from the Chacala indigenous community. In its center, the museum boasts archaeological and historical artifacts which are undated but presumed to be from the Aztec period. A group of explorers found Yelapa (~150 years ago) and discovered lobster for the first time from fishing in the bay. Once they realized that fishing was much easier labor than farming, they migrated to the coast. No one occupied the land at that time which made them think they were the first to discover what is now known as Yelapa. At least they did until they started unearthing objects, like preserved kitchen utensils and sculptures, which indicates the presence of a living community, but from many, many years ago. No one really knows exactly how old, although they assume they can date up to 1000 years, as they are similar in shape and design as artifacts found from the Mayans.

This morning we went for breakfast and some last minute souvenir shopping with Dawn. She shared her Uber with us - stopping along the way to the airport to get us super close to our Plan B AirBnB. The new AirBnB has a lot of character, including an odd bathroom with a very low ceiling.
