Trip Log

This was David's very first co-coordinated event and he did great. The original motive for the trip was so David could ski again with his favorite ski buddy, Colleen, who moved to Kimberley last year. And it's always more fun to do things with the Calgary Outdoor Club - so we decided to turn it into an event!
- Everyone arrived in Kimberley around the same time in the afternoon on Thursday. After settling in we took a walking tour around the Platzl - bright with Christmas lights - and watched the fellow in the cuckoo clock yodel on the hour. For 25c he'll come out and sing on demand - what a deal! Supper at Chef Bernard's proved to be an adventure - and turned into an evening actvity. The thought occured to me that perhaps I don't need to de-clutter my house afterall - I'll just turn it into a museum like Chef Bernard ;) Too late to go night skiing, we returned to the hostel for a while, and some went out for a few rounds of pool and waited around for the air guitar contest. Alas, it was late before they got that underway so most left without opportunity to participate.
- Friday brought a full day of snowshoeing in knee-deep snow. Thanks to the energetic moderates in the lead who broke trail, us slowpokes in behind had a lovely tramped-down trail to follow. Not much for views from the top, unlike the mountains we are used to around here, but still a fantastic day in the snow. Some of us enjoyed a really fun slide back down on butt-boards and one crazy carpet. Supper at the hostel was truly a feast, and our small bistro-style dining room was decorated with flowers and candles. Some set out after supper for night x-country skiing on the groomed and lit nordic tracks - a lot of fun! - while some went to a movie and others lounged around the hostel.
- Saturday many of us set out once again for x-country skiing on the groomed nordic tracks. Our favorites: Cardiac Arrest and Roller Coaster! Only one went downhill skiing, and others went snowshoeing. Another feast followed back at the hostel, and another evening of varied activities, indoors and out.
- Sunday morning most of us just headed back for home, while Cam, Marcella and Laurie went snowmobiling! I had some car trouble on the way back and managed to find a terrific garage in Radium who diagnosed some sort of a problem with the computerized thing-a-ma-jig, but they figured I would be just fine driving back home. If you ever have car trouble in that area, be sure to stop in at the ESSO in Radium - the mechanics there are super!
- Many thanks to our hosts, Manny and Theresa, for your kind hospitality!

'Twas a great adventure for Snoozy Snoozerson, Sleepy Sleeperson, Shrieky Shriekerson, Giggles Giggleson, Tipsy Tipperson, Snorty Snorterson (aka Flippy Flipperson), Go-ey Go-erson and their friends (Jim, Laura, Val, Emma, Cameron and Marcella). There was a whole lot going on, and I personally partook of the following activities: Friday - snow shoeing up Sunflower Hill and beyond, almost to Bump Mountain, potluck dinner, followed by a night ski at the Nordic Center. Saturday, x-c skiing at the Nordic Center, potluck dinner and then another night ski at the Nordic Center. Kimberley is beautiful, the hostel was fantastic and it was an all-around great time. Thanks to Marg for organizing it - I'll definitely be back next time!!
- Signed, Sleepy
