This trip to Blueberry wasn't as perfect as last time I went, but it was still pretty good. The snow conditions were absolutely beautiful, it was a great day, and the snow-covered-tree-wonderland that I remembered was still there in its glory. However, it was overcast and my already meagre sense of direction was challenged even further by the lack of a hanging sun. Unlike Marko's group who took the much nicer route starting off up the Hydroline cut (which is what I'll be doing from now on), we started off going up between the track-set x-c ski trail of West Elk Pass. At the top of the hill, we overshot Marko's entry trail into the trees (which was too soon according to my instincts) and headed out into the trees a bit further in. I had a good sense for where my hill was, but I did get hopelessly turned around a couple of times, especially the one time that we went up a mystery hill into an alternate universe where directions made absolutely no sense and we actually suspected that Marty's compass was crazy (when really it was just me).

Re-tracing our steps back out to one of our points of reference, we tried again and this time we stumbled onto the trail created by Marko's group. We followed this trail for the rest of the day, although it is not the trail I would have preferred. The trail I've done up Blueberry before is about 1/2km south of Marko's trail that we followed up. Marko's ended up being a bit steeper than my usual one, which is already steep enough near the top of the hill. We made it quite a bit of the way up the steep trail, but then storm and daylight concerns as well as some equipment problems turned us back a bit early.

We had our lunch break before starting the significant climbing part of the day where Marty and Brian decided to check out a couple of spruce traps for the amusement of the rest of us.

Definitely a trip to do over and over again... one day we'll get it just right, but I hope that day doesn't come too soon because then perhaps some of the appeal will be lost.
