Lower Red Deer River
#36 Bridge to Jenner Bridge
June 29- July 2, 2007
Cost is for two people

Car pool:

Marty, Rhonda and Robyn will be taking the boats and can probably take some gear if needed. We’ll meet at Undercurrents on Friday afternoon.

Peter, Dave and San (plus D. on Friday)

Christian, Jenny, Daria and Kristine

Colin and Deirdre: Colin is leaving early and can take gear if needed. Deirdre will go with Peter on Friday but won’t have gear.

Food & water: Feel free to coordinate food amongst yourselves. I’d recommend bringing food that’s easy to prepare and eat on the river, as well as something nice to eat in the evening. We may, or may not, get off the water for lunch, so plan for lunches you don’t need to cook and can prepare in a canoe. There should be plenty of time to cook in the evening. Bring lots of snacks & beverages. It can be hard to find potable water on the river, but campground for night 1 has pump water (may not be potable) and campground for night 3 has potable water. I will bring a filter. I’d recommend each boat carry a nice big jug of H 2 O, and be sure to have a water bottle handy.

MEC has a good checklist: http://www.mountainequipmentcoop.com/Main/content_text.jsp?FOLDER<>fold er_id=2534374302881825&CONTENT<>cnt_id=10134198673220303&bmUID= 1181674481440

We won’t need the whitewater stuff (wet suit, rescue equipment) although we will have bailers and throw bags and PFDs (included in rental package).

Costs:

The total cost per person is $99.58 plus the cost of the campground Friday (I don’t have a price- but we should all be able to fit on one site.) This includes:

Rentals: $920 (canoes, paddles, PFDs, throw bags, trailer, for 3 days)
Campground fees: group campground at Dinosaur Provincial Park: $158, plus Fri. (?) Both campgrounds have showers, firewood, etc.
Fuel: We’ll each contribute $10 for Marty’s fuel since he’s hauling the boats & shuttling. (Rhonda and I will give more since we’re also car pooling with him). Please share the cost of fuel with the people in your vehicle.
Map: R. bought one, will cover cost :)

Itinerary:

Friday:

Marty, Robyn, Rhonda: pick up canoes at Undercurrents
Meet at Emerson campground (#36 bridge) outside Brooks: about 2.5- 3 hours
Set up shuttle: about 2-3 hours

Ideally, we’ll all meet at the campground around 6:30 so we can set up the shuttle Friday night. This means you’ll need to leave the city around 4. If this isn’t feasible please let me know… we can be flexible.

Possible scenario for shuttle:

Colin, Marty, Peter and driver for Jenny/Christian/Daria/Kristine drive to Jenner Bridge; leave Marty’s truck, Colin’s van, Peter’s car at take-out. This is the best-case scenario if everyone wants to paddle Monday (7 hours of paddling). No doubling back needed (5 people in Marty’s truck, 5 people in Peter’s car, gear and 2 people in Colin’s vehicle until we reach Emerson).

We can modify this depending on what people choose for Monday. We’ll try to avoid doubling back to pick people up.

Saturday:

If we can’t set up the shuttle Friday, we need to do this as early as possible.

-On river at 8 am or so- hopefully by 10 if we’re shuttling.
-Paddle 28 km to Steveville campground (or random camp): about 6 hours. Note: no reservations made at Steveville. Plan for random camping!
-Plan for food that’s easy to eat on the river for lunch
-Winds get strong in the afternoon, so we can take a break to explore and paddle in the evening if we like (Paddling in the eve is great- lots of beaver activity!)
-If we paddle through, should be off the river by 4 or 5
-With breaks, maybe 7 or 8 pm (please plan food accordingly- bring easy snacks)
-Relaxed evening with music, beverages & food

Sunday:

-On river at 8 am- can be later if we like- easy paddling day
-Paddle 14 km to Dinosaur Provincial Park (a world heritage site!): about 3-4 hours
- Explore the park on our own (no tours available in afternoon)
- Campground has showers, firewood, potable water, fast food (burgers!)

-We have the group campground all to ourselves!

Monday: two options:

1) Stay at Dinosaur Park: hike, explore, sleep in, or
2) Big paddling day

On river: 7:00 am sharp!
Paddle 38 km to Jenner Bridge (about 7 hours, more if wind is strong)
Should be off the river by 3, maybe 4
Load truck
Pick up people & boats at Dinosaur Park (4-5 pm or so) if people decide not to paddle
Pick up vehicle(s) in Emerson (about 1 hr driving?)
Back to town: about 2.5-3 hours; should be home by 9, maybe 10 if we’re behind

Undercurrents closes at 6
Boats can be dropped off Tuesday morning, 10 am
$199.16
