Club Events 2007

2007-07-26 : COC - Welcome party for TOC, EOC, AOC, MOC
A great turn-out! Thanks, COC, for coming out and making our visitors feel welcome. Speaking of visitors (since that's what the night was all about), we had several TOCers and a few EOCers in attendance this evening. Lutz (MOC) hasn't arrived just yet.

Welcome to Calgary, visitors, and we hope you have a great time while you're here!

2007-07-27 : COC - Whitewater Rafting on the Kicking Horse
What a rush! This trip is definitely worth doing. We did the half-day which translated to little more than one hour on the actual river. The full day would probably be the better way to go, although as one intrepid rafter shivvered right out of his speedo, we figured perhaps the half-day was enough. Our guide, Irick (sp??), was fantastic. He trained us and then yelled at us until we got the "rowing in synch" thing correct. He didn't have oars on our raft to correct our blunders so it was important that we do it right.

We hope our TOC visitors had a fabulous time - we sure did. And thanks to Joel and Kevin for their help in fixing the little "gong show" I created when I copied an old event and didn't confirm that the outfitter was still located in the same place. All's well that ends well!

2007-07-29 : COC - River Float: Bowness to the Zoo
As it turned out, Lutz was our only visitor who made it on this float, but we all made up for the lack of more visitors by having lots and lots of warfare. Except for the Switzerland boat, of course. Once they did get a bit too close to a trigger-happy rafter who dumped a jug full of water into a Switzerland lap but for the most part I think we did a fine job of honoring their request to NOT be splashed.

This trip was SO MUCH FUN... perhaps the best ever! Thanks to all of you who came out for a very very fun day, and thanks to all the photographers who helped capture the moments.

2007-07-30 : COC - Elbow Lake Backpack and Rae Glacier Dayhike
Michelle couldn't make it so at the last minute Phil took her place. Jenn found the fossil to beat all fossils. Elliott taught us all that we were just a bunch of hiking addicts who could find more balance in life by doing more ironing and watching some television. John didn't let anyone get a word in edgewise. Kevin burned down our picnic table with his archaic campstove and then came down with a cold on day 1 and was left to sleep at the camp site on day 2 as we day-hiked from Elbow Lake and then swung back to pick him up. Amanda spent four days in the backcountry only to cut her hand on the toilet paper dispenser at Moose McGuire's when we got back to town.

Anyway, we all had a great time (except, perhaps, for Kevin). The weather was great. The visitors had a fun time exploring the Rae Glacier crevasses and taking a few trips down the dregs of the glacier on the crazy carpets. The camp site and general area were a thing of beauty.

Thanks to everyone for coming out - a very memorable trip indeed!

2007-08-03 : COC - Miller Time
Mmmmmmmmm.... beer....

Thanks to Barry and Ron for showing up and making my day. They are two Megawheelians who I worked with in the late 90's. Pretty cool.

Thanks to the rest of you for coming out, too - I needed the outing and was thrilled that so many of you were interested in such short notice. :)

2007-08-04 : COC - Upper Kananaskis Lake Circuit
In spite of losing our "fast group" (or should we call them our "directionally challenged group"???) early in the day, we had a fabulous time. The weather was awesome, and the hike was amazing. Mountains, rockfalls, waterfalls, moss... this one has it all. Too bad the "fast group" missed it, although it sounds like they had their own wonderful adventure heading, we believe, in towards The Forks. Once they realized their mistake, they turned around and headed back to the parking lot, and did a bit of a side jaunt along the lakeshore looking for us. We arrived about 45 minutes later and we were all happily reunited... except for Jillian and Catherine who'd met us at trailhead and headed out before we returned.

Happy trails,
-- Rhonda

2007-08-05 : CCC - Sci-fi film Sunshine

We'll meet in front of "the big chair" in the lobby, in front of the box office, starting at 6:45 p.m. and go into the theatre at 7 p.m. The film starts at 7:10 p.m.

"Set the controls for the heart of the sun, ordered Pink Floyd in 1968, and this beautiful-looking new space adventure written by Alex Garland and directed by Danny Boyle does exactly this. It's a film with some stunning sequences and gobsmacking NASA-graphic visuals which are destined to be shown on giant Imax screens around the country.

Superbly photographed by Alwin Kuchler and designed by Mark Tildesley, Sunshine is a thrilling and sensual spectacle." ~~Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

Directed by Danny Boyle (28 Days Later, Trainspotting, Shallow Grave), Sunshine is described as a "fascinating, thought-provoking, religious-psychological sci-fi thriller."

There is a distinct possibility of going to the nearby Brewster's Pub afterwards to discuss the movie and whatever else comes to mind.
