2008-07-05 : COC - Iron Springs, and Reasons to Celebrate
Iron Springs EASY MTN BIKING

After months of inactivity, I should have realized I was biting off more than I could chew with this event today, but I didn't, and it all turned out ok anyway. I didn't get abandoned on the trail to live out my days begging food from hikers and bikers (Marty estimated that I'd need to gain about 800 pounds to hibernate through the winters). I had a great time, with a great group, and I learned the most important things about the sport of mountain biking from Lori. Some of my favorites:
1) I'm only walking my bike up this hill to work different muscle groups
2) To increase my speed, I only have to master the farmer blow. I don't have to worry about increasing leg strength, lung capacity, overall stamina or skill... I just have to master that farmer blow. Much easier - thanks for the tip! I'll get right on it!

This was one of the best rides I have been on what a great group!!! I am glad I could help you out Rhonda! When's our next one!!!

Reasons to Celebrate - Duane's 39 and Sibel and Jeff are Getting Hitched! Theme: Fashion Police

Thank you Rhonda and Jill for setting up this event, and Duane for sharing your day with Jeff and I. Thank you all for coming, and what a great evening it was! We were so fortunate with the good weather! I was glad to be able to provide a good venue - the fire was awesome - you should have seen the pile of ash the morning after!! What a greast evening - I too enjoyed seeing everyone, catching up, and can't wait to see all the photos!! Sibel I just want to say that I was VERY impressed with the creative ideas that showed up for the Fashion Police theme. We were long overdue for a theme party and I was not disappointed with the great enthusiasm and willingness to make complete dorks of themselves that attendees showed. Thanks to everyone for a great time! Rhonda

COC - Half-Jumpingpound: EASY/SLOW MTB

Duhn duhn..... duhn duhn.... duhn-duhn.dUHN-dUHN.DUHN-NUHN-NUHN-NUHN-NUHN-NUHN... That's the theme from "Jaws", by the way, and it was the sound made today by the brake lever of my mountain bike piercing the otherwise lovely calm day. Today, of course, was my first return to Jumpingpound since that day. Perhaps I was a tad hyper-aware of that fact myself but I know that my companions for the day were spell-bound by my endless stories about the bizarre accident, how it happened, and the equally bizarre healing process. Yes, they were. OK, maybe not so much, but they put up with me, and I think they all had a fantastic time, and I KNOW I had a fantastic time.

Thanks to Marty for taking me and some other newbies and pokies out for a fantastic ride today, sticking only to the easy half of Jumpingpound. I will return to the more difficult side one day... but I'll save that for another time.

2008-07-13 : COC - Nihahi Ridge - Slowpokes Only
After a few minutes on the switchbacks, we split easily into a "faster slow group" and a "slower slow group". Rita and Pam graciously accepted the task of taking charge of the "faster slow group" and their group trouped all the way up to just below the final ascent to the ridge. My group... the "slower slow group" made it easily to my intended destination - lunch just above the cable/fence.

After the hike, Pam won everyone's hearts with suggestions of a 'stretch our legs' walk around Forgetmenot Pond, and then ice cream in Bragg Creek.

2008-07-17 : COC - Chester Lake, and Calgary Stampeders vs Hamilton Pussycats Football Game
Chester Lake

I can't believe this was my first time up to Chester in the summer. I've gone up there a couple of times in the fall, and a bunch of times in the winter, but this was the first time in the summer. It is an amazingly beautiful place, and you can get there with really not that much effort. Thanks to Neva for taking the "slightly faster" group today while I did my usual "slightly slower" pace with a few others. Lots of exploring on the Elephant Rocks (only my second time there) and then back to town in plenty of time for Barry's football game event tonight! Shockingly, no one was interested in stopping in at the new casino to get drunk and lose the mortgage payments before we came home.

2008-07-20 : COC - FIFTH ANNUAL Pirates on the Bow - River Float: Bowness to the Zoo
The weather was perfect again, high twenties and sunny; it is as if the rafting Gods have looked favorably upon this event these past years. The water war began onshore before the first raft even touched the river and continued incessantly until the take-out location on the shores of Inglewood. Comments:
  • Completely worth chipping paint from my pedicure! (Angela)
  • Favorite moment: Renaye managed to steal Marc's orange hat, we got a photo of that, and he nearly lost his bucket as well. Then when no one from their boat was looking, Marc jumped in to our boat, hid on the floor until we manovered to Renaye's boat, they had no idea he was hiding in our boat, they thought we would attack and ofcourse, we said, oh no, we're taking a break, I mentioned the take out location was approaching, we wanted to be prepared, and Marc jumped up, pried his hat lose and jumped back in to the water to escape. It was the best strategy I saw to retreive the capain's hat! (Sibel)
  • When I heard that one of the boats was going to be "The Captain and Ten Eels", I wondered what they were going to do with that. Juanita did a BRILLIANT job of finding a captain's hat for Marc (next he'll be joining the Village People, who, incidentally, are still touring), and making five caps with one eel on each side. Captain and Ten Eels. Absolutely brilliant. (Rhonda)
  • - I, “Captain & 10 eels” raft, brought a new and improved WMD, (Weapon of Mass Drenching). I lost and then captured back my fashionable pink captain’s hat; Juanita talked me into wearing it LOL. At one point, in desperation, I formed an alliance with my mates on the Pirate raft and stowed away in 5-inch deep, warm foot-soupy water until close enough to surprise board the “hat-thief “ raft and regain my prized pink head-gear. The final bucket thrown was on me as I was dry and rolling up my raft at the take-out; I am certain those I drenched were thankful to this person, whoever that was. (Marc/Stripey)
