TANGO: A DANCE, A CULTURE, A WAY OF LIFE

Tango originated in the 1880’s in the brothels of Buenos Aires. People from all over the world were there: Ireland, Spain, Italy, Germany, France, England, and Turkey. It was a dance about lust and violence… Disillusioned immigrants created this dance, which borrows the steady drum beat from African roots, Indian rhythms from the natives, mixed with the music of the early Spanish colonists.

It was entirely a lower class dance until the early 1900’s when the lower classes were allowed to vote and their culture got absorbed into the rest of the society - which changed the feeling of the dance quite significantly.

Tango is the projection of life on the dance floor. Tango is a conversation. Taking part in this conversation means listening and responding to one’s partner. Tango is an improvised dance. When you see tango as a flexible dance, and understand the beauty of how to piece the different elements together, the dance becomes more exciting. Only then, you can truly make this dance your own, with your own expression and flavor…

Note that this is the sign-up sheet for women. Men, please sign up here. In order to keep our gender ratios even, if we end up with more of one gender than the other, the "extras" will be given a full refund and invited to attend a different session. When you register, please put the name of your partner in the "Notes" section if you are coming with someone specific.
Thanks all for coming... Hope you liked the "free style" tango lesson; where more important than the mechanical steps is the way you feel the music and communicate it to your partner. Too bad the time was so short, but hopefully I'll have the chance to meet with you again. Adrian
