COC - Beginner Flail and Ski

We came, we saw, we flailed. It was awesome - thanks to all who came out to flail with me!

Starting at the Info Center, we practiced a bit going back and forth on the trail near the info center, and then ventured out into the trails where we did a short loop, connecting the Lodgepole and Sinclair trails for a total of about four kilometers.

Lunch at the Lodge with Marty's group was fun, and Ralph did share his chocolate with us (despite the photographic evidence to the contrary).

Looking forward to next time - I'd like to try and get more distance.

CCC - Rembetika Hipsters - Ten Year Anniversary Concert

The Rembetika Hipsters are celebrating ten years as a band with a performance at the Engineered Air Theatre in the Epcor Centre For the Performing Arts on December 17, 2006. Special guests opening the show are the Jay Crocker Quartet. The show starts at 7 PM with doors open at 6 PM, general seating. Catering before the show and at intermission will be provided by Pegasus Restaurant and Brulee Bakery.

The lineup for the Hipsters that evening will be Nick Diochnos (bouzouki, vocals), Lincoln Frey (clarinet, melodeon, baglama), Jonathan Lewis (violin, baglama, accordion), Ben Johnson (percussion, tzoura, santour), Allen Baekeland (guitar, vocals), Brigitte Dajczer (violin, vocals), Malcolm Lim (percussion) and Danny Patton (bass). The show will be recorded for release in 2007.

I have been a fan of the Rembetika Hipsters since 1999 when I started working with their first percussionist, Ben. Since then, I've taken belly dance classes with their former belly dancer, and followed them around from gig to gig, including the Greek Festival, my own housewarming party, and several times at Pegasus restaurant (on Wednesday evenings). They have a fantastic unique sound with unusual rhythms and haunting tones to go with the exotic Greek lyrics (nevermind that they're mostly about prison, loss and/or "Narghile"). It was absolutely amazing to see the whole group together for the first time (for me, anyway), including Nick (bouzouki, vocals), Allen (guitar, vocals), Ben (percussion, santur, baglama), Lincoln (clarinet, melodeon), Brigitte (violin), Jonathan (violin, baglama), Malcolm (percussion) and Danny (bass).

The Ten Year Anniversary Concert was fantastic. The Hipsters never disappoint. Their special guest, Jay Crocker was also very good - unique "pop jazz" music.
